A Foundation for understanding aptitudes, or natural abilities

Who we are

Johnson O'Connor established our foundation to provide an aptitude testing program to help individuals discover their natural potential by identifying personal strengths.

Since 1922, hundreds of thousands of people have used our aptitude testing service to find direction in educational and career planning, whether still in school, seeking employment, or making mid-life career changes.

The Johnson O'Connor Research Foundation is a nonprofit scientific research and educational organization with two primary commitments: to study human abilities and to provide people with a knowledge of their aptitudes that will help them derive more satisfaction from their lives.

Our approach to understanding the individual has continued to evolve over the last eighty plus years. We are always conducting research to improve our aptitude measures, discover new aptitudes, and enhance our ability to interpret aptitude test scores for our clients and the public at large. We keep in touch through bulletins and follow-ups with our examinees and we test workers in diverse occupational groups to help us better understand aptitude patterns.

Why Do People Come in for Testing?

It starts with students, high school or college, making choices about education that will affect the rest of their lives. Choosing a college or career simply based on what friends and family members have done or suggest can be a haphazard way of making such an important decision.

What suits one person or an earlier generation may not work at all for someone else. We know that people are happier and more satisfied in their careers when they choose work that matches their aptitude pattern. Finding a career path that allows them to develop their natural abilities will allow them to express their fullest potential.

Of course, there is career planning after the school years as well. The average age of our clients is about twenty-eight. Working adults face as many decisions about careers as do students.

Consider these ruminations of an adult pondering the next step in life: What will a promotion or transfer mean to my job satisfaction level? I am successful at what I do, but am still unhappy—is there a reason? Should I invest time and money in that Master's Degree? I studied law because my parents are lawyers, but is there something else I could be doing? These are all typical scenarios we hear from our adult clients.

Indeed, such questions continue to pop up throughout life. Inquisitive mature adults, even senior citizens contemplating retirement activities and choices, find value in having their aptitudes assessed.

Discovering a potential for visual or auditory or communicative or dexterity-defined activities to pursue when able to find the time to develop new skills or to burnish and extend existing ones can prove exciting to anyone curious enough to explore. There is no upper age limit to those we test.

What Do People Learn?

Aptitude testing provides an objective assessment of abilities, independent of one's work or educational history, interests, or self-estimate. This helps people focus on personal strengths, on getting past being discouraged by those activities that prove more difficult to master.

Being able to get a sense of direction, to narrow down the very many options out there in the world of work, can be a strong stimulus to finding a satisfying niche in life.
